Recently, at a Makindu Muguka base, I happened to pose the
question as to who the best presenters at Musyi FM are. The people I posed the
question to were in a serious state of 'Handas'. I could therefore expect to get
honest answers from them. In asking that question, I was just trying to see
whether my views on the best presenters at Musyi FM are shared by others.
Now some of the names that kept on coming up, with regard to
the best presenters at Musyi FM included that of Onesmus Mwengei, Mukamba
Mjanja, Jackline Kalenga, DJ Noma Noma and Wavinya Mwiitu wa Muthiani. There
was also a good number who mentioned Michael Kyalo, Master Mully and the newly
hired Wa-Masaa. There is also the fella who runs sports programs, Tinda7, who
got quite a number of mentions among the best presenters at Musyi FM, as were
news anchors Titus Muli and Susan Ndunda. Kadot (Christine Ndanu) was also
mentioned among the best Musyi FM presenters, notwithstanding the fact that she
seems to have mostly switched from presenting to management…
An interesting name that was mentioned in that forum was
that of Shadrack Mutua Ilava, the Mwingi-based Musyi reporter (I don’t if it is the name
they love, the Mwingi accent that Mutua Ilava uses or the strange Mwingi news
that Mutua Ilava reports from time to time). There was even a fellow who
thought that Alex Ngila from Ngiini Mitaboni and Isaiah Daudi from South Coast are Musyi FM
presenters, and he had to be reminded that those two are actually people who just
call in to Musyi FM shows – not presenters or reporters!
I was able to establish that Musyi FM still commands a huge
audience in Ukambani, including the Mombasa Road section, even after the entry
of various new Kamba radio stations like County FM and Eene FM. It also became
clear to me that, to the extent that the fans were able to recall the names of
Musyi FM presenters instantly, it shows that the presenters are quite effective
at creating real connections with their audiences.
My survey may have been
informal, but from it, I was able to deduce that Musyi FM is still considered
to be among the foremost ‘serious’ radio stations in Ukambani.
Our
discussion eventually veered off from Musyi Fm presenters, to questions like how to apply for helb online and whether it is in fact possible to apply for Kenya id online... That really is the beauty of muguka bases: you end
up discussing, in great depth, a wide variety of topics within a short duration
of time.
